How much is the SASSA payment
Check how much SASSA grants pay in 2026
The amount you receive from SASSA depends on the type of social grant. Older Persons, Disability, Child Support, Foster Child, Care Dependency and SRD grants do not all pay the same monthly amount.

If you are asking how much is the SASSA payment, there is no single amount that applies to every beneficiary. SASSA administers several social grants, and each one has its own monthly value.
The amount also depends on the specific grant for which a person qualifies. Someone receiving a Child Support Grant, for example, should not expect the same amount as someone receiving an Older Persons or Disability Grant.
For the 2026/27 financial year, the South African government increased most permanent social grants from April 2026. The SRD grant continued separately at its existing monthly amount.
Current SASSA grant amounts in September 2026
| Grant | Monthly amount |
|---|---|
| Older Persons Grant | Up to R2,400 |
| Older Persons over 75 | Up to R2,420 |
| Disability Grant | R2,400 |
| Care Dependency Grant | R2,400 |
| War Veterans Grant | R2,420 |
| Foster Child Grant | R1,290 |
| Child Support Grant | R580 |
| Grant-in-Aid | R580 |
| SRD Grant | R370 |
How much is the Older Persons Grant?
The Older Persons Grant is paid to qualifying older people in South Africa. From April 2026, the standard maximum amount increased to R2,400 per month.
There is an age-related difference for beneficiaries older than 75 years. The official government information page states that beneficiaries over 75 can receive up to R2,420.
This is why two people who both describe their benefit as an old age or Older Persons Grant may mention slightly different amounts. Age can affect the maximum payment.
How much is the Disability Grant?
The Disability Grant increased to R2,400 in April 2026. It is one of the grants that received an R80 increase under the 2026 Budget.
The fact that the Older Persons and Disability grants currently share the same standard amount does not mean they have the same eligibility rules. They are separate grants intended for different circumstances.
How much is the Care Dependency Grant?
The Care Dependency Grant is also R2,400 per month following the April 2026 increase. It supports eligible caregivers responsible for a child who requires permanent care or support under the rules of the programme.
When comparing SASSA amounts, this grant should not be confused with the Child Support Grant. Although both relate to support involving children, their purpose, qualifying rules and monthly values are different.
How much is the Child Support Grant?
The Child Support Grant increased from R560 to R580 per month from April 2026.
If more than one qualifying child is linked to a caregiver, the total household payment can naturally be higher than R580 because the grant value is associated with each qualifying child rather than being one universal amount for the whole household.
How much is the Foster Child Grant?
For September 2026, the Foster Child Grant amount is R1,290. The 2026 Budget also provides for another increase to R1,300 from October 2026.
This upcoming change is worth noting because an article that simply lists one value for the entire financial year would quickly become outdated when October begins.
How much is the War Veterans Grant?
The War Veterans Grant increased to R2,420 from April 2026. This is slightly higher than the standard R2,400 maximum listed for several other major grants.
How much is Grant-in-Aid?
Grant-in-Aid increased to R580 from April 2026. It is different from a standalone Child Support or Older Persons Grant because it is intended as additional assistance under its own qualifying conditions.
How much is the SASSA SRD payment?
The Social Relief of Distress, commonly called the SRD grant, remains at R370 per month for successful applicants during the 2026/27 extension.
The government extended the current form of the SRD programme from 1 April 2026 through 31 March 2027. This means the R370 figure should not be confused with the amounts paid under permanent grants such as Disability or Child Support.
Why do people receive different SASSA amounts?
One of the biggest causes of confusion is seeing another beneficiary receive a different value and assuming that something went wrong. In reality, the difference may simply be because the two people receive different types of grants.
Age can also matter in the Older Persons Grant, and households may receive support linked to more than one eligible person or child. For that reason, you should identify the exact grant before comparing your payment with somebody else’s.
Do these amounts stay the same forever?
No. Social grant values can be changed through government budgeting and policy decisions. The figures above reflect the 2026/27 financial-year decisions currently in effect.
When searching online, always check the year attached to a figure. A page showing R560 for Child Support, for example, may simply have been written before the April 2026 increase.
On the next page you can see how to understand your payment amount, what is changing in October 2026 and where to verify SASSA values using official government information.
